Strong, healthy smiles start with prevention. At Inspire Dental & Orthodontics, we use dental sealants and professional fluoride treatments to protect kids, teens, and adults from cavities before they start. Sealants shield the deep grooves of back teeth, while fluoride strengthens enamel and reverses early decay. Quick, painless, and affordable, both treatments are covered by Medicaid, CHIP, and most major PPO plans at our Mesquite, Garland, and Balch Springs offices.
Sealants and fluoride are two of the most effective cavity-prevention treatments in modern dentistry, and they work in completely different ways. Sealants are a thin, tooth-colored coating painted onto the chewing surface of back molars, sealing off the deep grooves where food and bacteria love to hide. Fluoride, on the other hand, is a mineral that strengthens enamel from the surface and can even reverse the earliest signs of decay before a cavity forms.
Used together, they give your child's teeth a powerful one-two defense. We offer both at every children's dental visit, and they are also a smart choice for adults at higher cavity risk. Most insurance plans cover both treatments fully for kids, and our team handles all the verification before your appointment.
Both treatments prevent cavities, but they work differently and protect different parts of the tooth. Here is a quick side-by-side breakdown.
A thin resin coating bonded to the chewing surface of back molars and premolars.
A concentrated varnish or gel that remineralizes and hardens tooth enamel across all surfaces.
Stops decay before it starts, saving your child from drilling, fillings, and dental anxiety down the road.
Both treatments take just a few minutes, no shots, no drilling, and your child can eat right after.
Medicaid, CHIP, and most PPO plans fully cover both treatments for children with no out-of-pocket cost.

Both treatments are quick, comfortable, and easy to fit into a routine cleaning. Here is what to expect from start to finish.
The hygienist gently cleans and dries the teeth so the sealant or fluoride can bond properly to the enamel surface.
For sealants, a mild gel is applied for a few seconds to roughen the chewing surface, helping the sealant grip securely.
The clear or tooth-colored sealant is brushed into the grooves of back molars, flowing into every fissure.
A blue light hardens the sealant in about 30 seconds per tooth, creating a strong, smooth shield.
The dentist checks the bite to make sure the sealant is smooth and comfortable. Any high spots are quickly polished.
A thin layer of fluoride varnish is brushed onto every tooth. It sets quickly and tastes mild and fruity.
Avoid sticky or hard foods for an hour. Brush gently that night, and resume normal eating the next morning.
At every six-month cleaning, we inspect the sealants for chips or wear and reapply fluoride to keep enamel strong.
Sealants and fluoride are not just feel-good treatments. The research backing them is strong, and the results show up in fewer cavities, fewer fillings, and fewer dental emergencies for kids who get them on time.
Reduction in cavities on chewing surfaces of back teeth that have sealants applied (CDC data).
Children without sealants are nearly three times more likely to get cavities in their first molars compared to those with sealants.
For children, both sealants and fluoride treatments are typically covered at 100% with no copay under Texas Medicaid, CHIP, and most major PPO insurance plans. Adult fluoride coverage varies by plan, but we will verify your benefits before your visit so there are no surprises. If you do not have insurance, both treatments are affordable out-of-pocket and are among the lowest-cost preventive procedures in dentistry.
Prevention is the easiest dentistry there is.
We believe the best dental visit is the one that keeps you out of the chair for the wrong reasons. Sealants and fluoride are inexpensive, fast, and proven, and we make them part of every preventive visit when they are indicated. Our team also looks for early signs of decay that can still be reversed, catching problems while they are small enough to treat without drilling.

"They explained sealants and fluoride options for both my kids in plain English and our PPO covered it all. No upselling, no surprises. Will keep coming back."
"Mi hijo recibió selladores y flúor sin ningún problema. El personal es muy paciente y todo lo cubrió Medicaid. Muy recomendado para familias."
The American Dental Association recommends applying sealants to the first permanent molars as soon as they come in, usually around age 6, and then to the second permanent molars around age 12. Earlier sealants on baby molars may also be recommended for children at higher cavity risk.
Sealants can last up to nine years with proper care, though some may chip or wear down sooner from chewing. We check sealants at every routine cleaning and can repair or replace any that have worn away. There is no downside to keeping them in place as long as possible.
Yes. Professional fluoride treatments are safe and have been used in dentistry for decades. The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both endorse fluoride varnish as a key cavity-prevention tool. The amount used is small, controlled, and stays on the teeth, not in the body.
Yes. Adults at higher cavity risk, including those with deep molar grooves, dry mouth, exposed root surfaces, or a history of frequent cavities, can benefit from both treatments. Many of our adult patients receive fluoride varnish at routine cleanings, and sealants are sometimes recommended for cavity-prone adults as well.
Neither treatment is painful. There is no drilling, no shots, and no numbing required. A mild fluoride taste lingers briefly but disappears within an hour. Side effects are extremely rare and limited to occasional mild irritation in patients with specific allergies, which we screen for before treatment.
Right away after sealants. After fluoride varnish, we ask patients to avoid hot drinks, hard or sticky foods, and brushing for at least four to six hours so the varnish has time to fully absorb into the enamel. Soft foods and water are fine immediately.
For children under 18, Texas Medicaid and CHIP cover both treatments at 100%. Most PPO insurance plans also fully cover both for children, and many cover fluoride for adults as well. Our front desk verifies your specific benefits before your visit, so you know exactly what is covered.
