Worn or Eroded Teeth? Let Us Restore and Protect Them
Teeth that look flat, thin, or notched have lost some of their protective enamel over time. The good news is that wear can be slowed and the damage repaired. The sooner we look, the more enamel we can help you keep.

Why Teeth Wear Down
Enamel is strong, but it does not grow back once it is gone. Several everyday habits and conditions can wear it thin over the years. These are the reasons we see most often.
Grinding and Clenching
Grinding or clenching, often at night, slowly flattens the biting surfaces. It is one of the most common reasons teeth look short or even across the top.
Acid Erosion
Acidic drinks, citrus, and acid reflux soften and dissolve enamel over time, leaving teeth thin, smooth, or slightly see-through at the edges.
Hard or Aggressive Brushing
Scrubbing hard with a stiff brush wears notches into the teeth near the gum line, a type of damage called abrasion.
Years of Normal Use
Some wear is simply the result of a lifetime of chewing. It tends to show up gradually and is easy to track at routine checkups.
A Bite That Does Not Line Up
When teeth do not meet evenly, certain teeth take more force and wear faster. Correcting the bite helps protect them.
Dry Mouth
Saliva protects and remineralizes enamel. When the mouth is dry from medications or other causes, teeth wear and erode more easily.
What Your Wear Pattern Tells Us
The way teeth wear points to the cause. Recognizing the pattern helps us protect the cause, not just patch the damage. Here are the four we see most.
Flat, Even Wear on Top
Biting surfaces look flattened and shiny, often matching between upper and lower teeth. Front edges may look short or chipped. This points to grinding or clenching, known as attrition.
A night guard usually helps first
Thin, Smooth, Cupped Surfaces
Enamel looks glossy, thin, or slightly see-through, with shallow dips on the chewing surfaces. The damage is spread out rather than in one spot. This points to acid erosion.

Notches at the Gum Line
Small V-shaped notches near the gum line usually come from hard brushing, called abrasion. Broad, gradual wear across many teeth often reflects years of normal use.

When Worn Teeth Should Be Checked Sooner
A little wear over many years is normal and easy to monitor. Other signs mean the wear is moving faster than it should and is worth a closer look. Call your nearest Inspire Dental location if you notice any of the following:
- Teeth that look noticeably shorter, flatter, or more square than before
- New sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods and drinks
- Yellow or darker tooth showing through where enamel has thinned
- Edges that chip, crack, or feel rough and sharp to the tongue
- Waking with a sore jaw or headaches, which can signal nighttime grinding
Wear that is caught early is far easier to protect. Once enamel is gone it does not return, so acting sooner keeps the repair simple.
How We Restore and Protect Worn Teeth
Care for worn teeth has two goals: stop the wear from continuing and rebuild what was lost. We always start with the most protective, least invasive step that solves the problem.
Custom Night Guards to Stop Grinding
If grinding is wearing your teeth, a custom night guard cushions the bite while you sleep and shields the enamel you have left. It is the simplest way to slow further damage.

When a tooth has lost a lot of structure, a crown restores its shape, strength, and protection. It covers the worn tooth so you can chew comfortably again.
Learn about dental crowns →For lighter wear, bonding or protective fluoride may be enough, and we always explain what we find before starting. For trusted background reading, the Cleveland Clinic explains the stages and causes of tooth erosion, and the American Dental Association covers tooth erosion and acid reflux in plain language.

Worn Smiles, Comfortably Restored
Real reviews from patients who came in with worn or sensitive teeth and left with a clear plan to protect and rebuild them.
My front teeth had gotten short and the edges were chipping. They explained it was from grinding, made me a night guard, and rebuilt the worn edges. My bite feels comfortable again and the teeth look natural.
My teeth had gotten thin and sensitive from years of acidic drinks. The dentist showed me exactly where the enamel had worn, helped me change a few habits, and protected the worst spots. The sensitivity is so much better now.
Mis dientes se veían desgastados y planos por rechinarlos en la noche. Me hicieron un protector nocturno y restauraron los dientes más dañados. Ahora mastico sin molestias y mi sonrisa se ve mucho mejor. Equipo muy amable y profesional.
