Cavities or Tooth Decay? We Treat Them Gently

A cavity is a small hole that forms when acids wear down the enamel of a tooth. Caught early, it is one of the simplest things we fix, often with a single, comfortable visit. The sooner we catch it, the more of your natural tooth we save.

What is causing it

Why Cavities Form

Tooth decay happens when bacteria turn sugars and starches into acids that wear away enamel. A few everyday habits and conditions make that more likely. These are the most common reasons.

Plaque and Sugary Foods

The most common cause. Bacteria in plaque feed on sugar and starch, then release acids that slowly dissolve the hard outer layer of the tooth.

Brushing and Flossing Gaps

When plaque is not cleared away each day, it builds up between teeth and along the gum line, where decay quietly takes hold.

Frequent Snacking and Sipping

Grazing on snacks or sipping sweet drinks all day keeps acid on the teeth, leaving little time for enamel to recover between meals.

Dry Mouth

Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acid. When certain medications or conditions reduce saliva, teeth are left more exposed to decay.

Deep Grooves and Receding Gums

The pits on back teeth and exposed roots from gum recession are hard to clean, so they tend to trap plaque and decay more easily.

Old or Worn Dental Work

A filling or crown that has worn or leaked over the years can let bacteria back in, allowing new decay to form around the edges.

How decay progresses

The Four Stages of Tooth Decay

Decay does not happen all at once. It moves through clear stages, and catching it early makes the fix simpler. Here is how it tends to unfold.

1
Earliest stage

White Spot

The first sign is a small, chalky white spot where minerals have been lost. There is no hole yet, and at this point decay can often be stopped or even reversed with fluoride and better home care.

2
Enamel

Enamel Cavity

The decay breaks through the surface and a true hole forms in the enamel. You may not feel anything yet, but a small filling is now needed to clean it out and seal the tooth.

3
Dentin

Dentin Decay

Once decay reaches the softer dentin beneath the enamel, it spreads faster. This is when sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet often starts. A larger filling or a crown may be needed.

4
Pulp or abscess

Pulp Damage and Abscess

If decay reaches the nerve at the center of the tooth, it can cause real pain and lead to infection or an abscess. Treatment at this stage usually means a root canal to save the tooth.

When a Cavity Should Not Wait

Many cavities cause no symptoms at first, which is why regular checkups matter. Some signs mean decay has moved deeper and you should be seen soon. Call your nearest Inspire Dental location if you notice any of the following:

  • A toothache or pain that lingers, especially when biting or chewing
  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet that does not fade quickly
  • A visible hole, pit, or dark spot on a tooth
  • A rough edge or a piece of tooth that has chipped away
  • Swelling, a bad taste, or pain that wakes you at night

Decay only gets larger over time. Treating a cavity early keeps the fix small and helps you avoid a root canal later.

How we help

How We Treat Cavities

Treatment depends on how far the decay has gone. We always start with the gentlest option that solves the problem and saves as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Same-Day Tooth-Colored Fillings

For most cavities, we clean out the decay and place a tooth-colored filling that blends right in. It is a quick, comfortable visit, and you leave with the tooth fully restored.

Crowns for Larger Decay

When a cavity is too large for a filling, a crown caps and protects what remains of the tooth, restoring its strength and shape so you can chew normally again.

If decay has reached the nerve, we will explain every option clearly before we begin. For trusted background reading, the Cleveland Clinic has a helpful overview of cavities and tooth decay, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research explains tooth decay and how to prevent it.

I had two small cavities I had been putting off. They filled both the same morning with tooth-colored fillings and I could not even tell where they were afterward. Painless, quick, and the staff put me right at ease.

A cold drink kept setting off one of my back teeth. They found the decay early, explained it on the X-ray, and a simple filling fixed it. The sensitivity is completely gone now. I appreciated how clearly they walked me through everything.

Cavities FAQ

Common Questions About Cavities and Tooth Decay

How do I know if I have a cavity?+
Early cavities often cause no symptoms, which is why regular checkups matter. As decay grows, you may notice sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet, a toothache, a visible hole or dark spot, or pain when biting. A dental exam and X-ray can spot a cavity before you feel anything.
Can a cavity heal on its own?+
Only at the very earliest stage. A white spot, where minerals have started to break down but no hole has formed, can sometimes be stopped or reversed with fluoride and better home care. Once a true hole forms in the enamel, it will not heal by itself and needs a filling.
Does getting a filling hurt?+
For most fillings, the area is gently numbed first, so you should feel little or nothing during the visit. Many small cavities are treated in a single, comfortable appointment. We check in with you throughout and take the time to keep you relaxed.
What happens if I leave a cavity untreated?+
A cavity only gets larger over time. Decay can spread from the enamel into the deeper layers of the tooth, leading to sensitivity, pain, and eventually an infection or abscess that may need a root canal. Treating it early keeps the fix small and protects the tooth.
How can I prevent cavities?+
Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and cut back on frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Regular cleanings and checkups catch problems early, and your dentist can suggest fluoride or sealants if you are prone to decay. Small habits make a big difference.
Is cavity treatment covered by insurance?+
Exams, fillings, and crowns are covered by most plans. Inspire Dental accepts Medicaid, CHIP, and most PPO plans, and we offer flexible in-house payment plans. Our team will review your benefits before treatment so there are no surprises.
