Why Your Wisdom Tooth Hurts
Wisdom teeth are the last to come in, often with little room to spare. That tight fit at the back of the mouth is behind most wisdom tooth pain. These are the most common reasons.
Not Enough Room to Erupt
The most common cause. When the jaw has no space for a wisdom tooth, it pushes against the tooth in front and the gum, which creates a deep, dull ache.
Infected Gum Flap
When a wisdom tooth is only partly through, a flap of gum can trap food and bacteria. That tissue gets sore, swollen, and infected, a condition called pericoronitis.
Decay on a Hard-to-Clean Tooth
Wisdom teeth sit so far back that they are tough to brush well. They often develop cavities, which can cause pain and sensitivity over time.
Pressure on Neighboring Teeth
An angled wisdom tooth can push on the molar beside it, causing crowding, pressure, and an ache that spreads along the jaw.
Fully Impacted Tooth
Some wisdom teeth stay trapped under the gum or bone. They can press on nerves or form a cyst, causing deep pain even when nothing is visible.
Normal Eruption Soreness
Sometimes the tooth is simply working its way through healthy gum. This causes temporary tenderness that we can monitor and ease while it settles.
Fully Erupted, Partially Erupted, or Impacted
How a wisdom tooth is sitting in the jaw guides what we do about it. Here are the three situations we see and what each usually means for care.
All the Way Through
The tooth has come in straight, with room to bite normally. If it is healthy, painless, and you can keep it clean, it may not need removal.
Often kept, with regular cleaning and checkups
Only Part Way Out
Some of the tooth is through the gum and some is covered by a flap. Food and bacteria get trapped, which leads to soreness, swelling, and infection.
Usually treated, often with removal
Trapped Under Gum or Bone
The tooth cannot break through and stays stuck at an angle. It can press on nearby teeth or nerves and may form a cyst over time.
Removal is commonly recommended
When Wisdom Tooth Pain Needs Prompt Care
Mild soreness as a tooth comes in can often be watched for a short time. Other signs mean you should be seen sooner. Call your nearest Inspire Dental location if you notice any of the following:
- Throbbing pain, a bad taste, or pus around a back tooth or gum flap
- Swelling in the cheek or jaw, or trouble opening your mouth fully
- Pain that has lasted more than a few days or keeps returning
- Fever or swollen, tender glands in the neck along with the tooth pain
- Difficulty chewing or biting because of the pressure at the back
An infected gum flap can flare quickly. Treating it early eases the pain fast and helps keep the infection from spreading.
