Tooth Abscess? Get Fast, Gentle Relief From the Infection
A tooth abscess is a pocket of infection near a tooth or along the gum, and it will not clear on its own. The good news is that it responds well to prompt care. The sooner we treat it, the faster you feel better and the simpler the fix tends to be.

Why a Tooth Abscess Forms
An abscess starts when bacteria reach a place they should not be, and the body walls off the infection with a pocket of pus. A few common situations let that happen.
Deep, Untreated Cavity
The most common cause. When decay reaches the soft center of a tooth, bacteria infect the nerve and an abscess can form at the root tip.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
A crack or chip gives bacteria a path into the inner tooth. Even a small break can let infection take hold over time.
Gum Disease and Deep Pockets
When gum disease creates deep pockets around a tooth, bacteria can build up and form a gum abscess separate from the tooth itself.
Trapped Food or Debris
Something packed deep under the gum can irritate the tissue and seed an infection, often causing a tender, focused swelling.
Failed or Old Dental Work
A filling or crown that has leaked or worn down over the years can let bacteria back into the tooth and lead to a new infection.
Injury to a Tooth
A knock or fall can damage the nerve inside a tooth even without a visible break, and that injured nerve can become infected later.
Red Flags of a Tooth Abscess
An abscess often announces itself clearly. If you notice any of these signs, it is time to be seen. Do not wait for the pain to pass on its own.
Check Yourself for These Six Signs
Any one of these can point to an active infection that should be treated promptly. Several together mean you should call right away.
- Severe, throbbing toothache that will not ease
- A pimple-like bump or pus near a tooth or gum
- Swelling in the face, cheek, or jaw
- A bad taste or foul smell in your mouth
- Pain when biting, chewing, or touching the tooth
- Fever or swollen, tender glands in the neck
If swelling spreads toward your eye or throat, or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, seek emergency care right away.
Why an Abscess Should Not Wait
Unlike a passing ache, an abscess is an active infection. The pain may ease for a day if the pocket drains a little, but the infection stays and tends to spread. Call your nearest Inspire Dental location promptly if you notice any of the following:
- Throbbing pain, pus, or a bad taste near a tooth or the gum line
- Swelling in the cheek, jaw, or face that is growing
- Fever or a general feeling of being unwell along with tooth pain
- Pain that wakes you at night or does not ease with home care
- A tooth that feels loose, or a sore that keeps draining and returning
An abscess will not clear on its own. Treating it early relieves the pain quickly and helps keep the infection from spreading.
How We Treat a Tooth Abscess
Treatment has two goals: ease your pain fast and clear the infection at its source. We start by draining the abscess to relieve pressure, then treat the tooth so the problem does not come back.
Same-Day Relief and Drainage
We see you quickly to numb the area, drain the abscess, and clear the infection. Most patients feel dramatic relief the same day, and antibiotics are added when needed.
Learn about emergency dental care →Root Canal to Save the Tooth
When the infection sits inside the tooth, a root canal removes the diseased nerve, cleans the canal, and seals it. This stops the abscess for good and saves your natural tooth.

A bad infection had built up around one of my back teeth. The dentist explained that a root canal could save it, walked me through every step, and I never felt a thing. The pain that kept me up all night was gone by the next day.
